Diversity and Cultural Inclusion
Being an advocate for ALL children means ALL children. This includes children with special needs, children with non-traditional families, and children whose parents speak different languages. Therefore, the diversity of our PTA should reflect the diversity of our schools and communities.
How Do We Ensure Diversity and Cultural Inclusion? Ask the following questions to help get started:
•What is the school’s demographics?
•How many different cultures are in your school?
•Are there groups of children and parents that are not represented in the PTA leadership and/or membership?
• Diversity and Cultural Inclusion is intentional.
Here are some resources to help your unit:

Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion Award
Please help us celebrate PTA’s diversity and inclusion efforts and nominate a PTA for a Jan Harp Domene Diversity and Inclusion award.
The awards are presented in three categories–local unit, council/district and state—to the PTA that best demonstrates outstanding achievement in diversity and inclusion, as well as efforts to be more welcoming to all families.
National PTA was founded in the spirit of diversity and inclusion. Our association’s co-founder, Alice McLellan Birney, expressed that our mission was to make every child’s potential a reality, “irrespective of creed, color or condition.”
